Liberating Truth

Originally preached Feb 24, 2013 by Pastor Jonathan Laye

“Jesus said to the people who believed in him, ‘You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’  ‘But we are the descendants of Abraham,’ they said.  ‘We have never been slaves to anyone.  What do you mean, ‘You will set us free’?”  “Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.  A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.’”  John 8: 31 – 36 NLT

Jesus was surrounded by a group of  people who didn’t believe in Him.  They were questioning Him as if he were an imposter.  Yet in the crowd there were some who accepted His words and believed what He had to say.  Seeing their budding faith, Jesus challenged them to keep His commands and thus they could truly be His disciples.  That being the case, as they would continue in Him they would know that He is filled with truth, and that knowledge would liberate them from slavery to sin.

I. What Is Truth?

  1. Man has debated what truth is for centuries, but only one has given us the answer to that question and that was Jesus Christ. Jesus told His disciple Thomas, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”  John 14: 6 NLT
    1. Earlier Jesus told those around Him that, “The Father (God) who sent me is with me.” John 8: 16 NLT.  Therefore, if Christ is the “Truth” then He and the Father are the “Truth” together.
    2. In John 1: 1, 2, 14; John the Apostle identified Jesus as being the Word and that the Word and God was and is and always will be One. Therefore, if Christ is the “Truth” then God is the “Truth” for they are one, Christ in the Father and the Father in Christ.
    3. Truth then is God, and God is Truth. Therefore, all that God is in character and wisdom and holiness is “Truth” and Christ, being God in the flesh, is “Truth” in character, wisdom, and holiness.
    4. Christ’s words and life then is a demonstration to mankind as to what “Truth” really is.
  2. Jesus Is the Truth:
    1. He is the Truth, therefore He lived the Truth in front of men.
    2. He is the embodiment of Truth.
    3. He is the picture of Truth.
  3. Jesus is the Communicator of Truth, “Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true. For he is sent by God.  He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit.”  John 3: 33, 34 NLT.

II. The Means Of Liberation Is Knowledge Of The Truth, Jesus Christ.

  1. To know Christ as in having knowledge concerning
    1. Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”  Matthew 7: 24, 25 NLT.
    2. Paul said to Timothy, “You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.” II Timothy 3: 15 NLT.
    3. Requires Bible reading and study, as well as a good prayer life and hearing the explanation of the Holy Scriptures.
  2. To know Christ as in experiencing Christ
    1. “And this is the eternal life, namely, that they might be having an experiential knowledge of you, the only genuine God, and of Him whom you sent on a mission, Jesus Christ.” John 17: 3 Wuest Expanded Translation.
      1. The Demoniac experienced the power of Christ to deliver.
      2. The Samaritan Woman and the woman taken in adultery experienced His forgiveness and grace.
      3. The blind, the lame, and the woman with the issue of blood experienced His healing.
      4. The widow woman experienced His resurrection power on her son.
      5. You can experience His power at work in your life.

III. When You Know The Truth, He Will Set You Free

  1. Free from the slavery of sin.
    1. “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness.”  Romans 6: 16 NKJV
    2. “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”  Romans 8: 1, 2 NKJV
  2. Free to be a permanent member of the family of God, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father’.  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.  And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we also may be glorified together.”  Romans 8: 14 – 17 NKJV
  3. Free to conquer evil, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”  Romans 8: 35, 37 NKJV

Are you ready to be liberated?  If you know the “Truth” – Christ – then you are free.  Arise in your freedom and march forth with “Truth” to conquer all your foes.
