The Harder The Battle, The Sweeter The Victory

Originally preached by Rev. Jonathan Laye, October, 2011

Any negative in life has to be met with a positive in order to neutralize it or overcome it, otherwise the negative will bring about defeat and downfall.  The greater the negative is in our life, then the greater the positive response has to be to overcome it.  This is life warfare, battles to overcome the resistance of evil which opposes us.  We will have to fight these negatives throughout our entire lives, so we need to recognize what it is that we are fighting so we can prepare ourselves for victory.

I. Invisible Foes Produce Negatives Forces To Oppose Us:

“For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 NLT

A. Thayer defines the word fighting (wrestle) as “a contest between two in which each endeavors to throw the other, and which is decided when the victor is able to press and hold down his prostate antagonist, namely hold him down with his hand upon his neck.”  The loser in a Greek wrestling contest then had his eyes gouged out resulting in blindness.

  1. The struggles we are involved in is no less desperate and fateful.

B. The evil forces which stand against believers has enormous power.

  1. The forces of evil are numerous.  Principalities, powers, rulers—all convey the idea of a large number.
  2. These evil forces are apparently organized into a government or a hierarchy.
  3. These evil rulers are the rulers of the darkness of this world.

a. Everything opposed to truth.
b. Everything opposed to righteousness and good.  They favor such things as: sexual immorality, perversion, gluttony, covetousness, pride, greed and honor of men.
c. They are spiritual forces of wickedness:

division                  war                   arrogance

prejudice               killing               stealing

favoritism             arguing              lying

anger                     selfishness         cursing

hate                        immorality       bitterness

C. These are the negative forces that we as believers must face and overcome.

II. Methods Of Overcoming And Gaining Victory.

A. Our victory is through the Lord, “Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.”  Psalm 44: 5 KJV

  1. Through the Lord’s strength we “push” the enemy down and pin him by the neck.
  2. Through the Lord’s name we are able to set our foot on the enemy’s chest.

B. Power From God , “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”  Luke 10:19 KJV

C. Through the love of Christ, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”  Romans 8: 35, 37 KJV

D. By being born of God, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:”  I John 5: 4(a)

E. By faith, “and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”  I John 5: 4(b)

Victory over evil is promised to us if we will take advantage of the right methods of warfare.  Let us go forth to battle evil so that we can go home in victory.
